The first written reference occurs in the eighth century, in one of the earliest Japanese texts.

In the myth, a god named Izanagi travels to the netherworld to find his wife, Izanami. This was considered a taboo journey at the time.

As Izanagi returned from his dangerous voyage, he took time to stop and bath, thereby purifying and transforming himself.

As the centuries passed, these acts of purification and transformation became more adventurous, and thus, the practice of Misogi was born.

Ascetic practitioners took an annual pilgrimage around the mountains of medieval Japan, challenging themselves in unique and uncommon ways.

Athletes and Entrepreneurs have adapted this “concept further and revered an Annual Misogi’s impact on their life…”

… in an effort to design moments that help us live (almost) forever…

These moments are also known as

“event horizons”:

experiences, moments in time, or challenges that leave a significant and lasting impression – creating a “dent” in your perceptive memory and expanding your sense of time in the temporal past.

Perhaps it is easier to describe the opposite: mundane hours, days and weeks of routine, of life on “autopilot,” where the time disappears into blurred memories – in these cases, it is as though you have never really lived at all.

Horizon Events is about consciously designing adventures, experiences, and memories to shake us up, to break the routine, to challenge us, and to answer the all-important question: when was the last time you tried something for the very first time?

Come join us, challenge yourself, and let’s stop time together.

Pete-a-Palooza

“A melancholy lesson of advancing years is the realisation that you can’t make old friends.”
― Christopher Hitchens

2020 was meant to be all about people and connection.

It started off well … Thursdays at Candela, birthday party ice baths!

… then Covid hit
… and the world shut down.

Especially in my home city – Melbourne

And those 9 months of lockdown, really reinforced how important family and friendships are…

… our newest edition didn’t meet his cousins until he was 5 months old …

So, for my birthday last year, I wanted to take it up a notch by hiring an epic house for a weekend and bringing my closest mates together for an experience that none of us would forget … especially given no one would be heading overseas anytime soon!
